Anthropology has been interested in various aspects of humanity and culture. Right from the beginning, anthropology has focused on superstition, sorcery, witchcraft or other occult sciences. Astrology has been remained as a major concern
of wider groups of folks! In late Paleolithic age human ancestors
traveled new worlds by tracing the positions of the Sun and the Moon. In Neolithic
age, many civilizations developed it which is called now astrology, a since of
future. In many countries still today, astrology is one of part of life. Mostly,
in India and Nepal, most of news papers, TV channel, FM radios, and other Medias
such like internet broadcast daily horoscope. Marriages, entering into the new
house, traveling etceteras are done with the help of astrological assistance.
In this case, has anthropology done any work on astrology? I searched on the
net and didn’t find any piece of work. Have you any knowledge on the bodies of
literature on the so called ‘Anthropology of Astrology”? Thanks!

Permalink Reply by Ranjan Lekhy on March 17, 2010 at 12:21am I understand nothing here. You, dear Radjan ask :
''Have you any knowledge on the bodies of literature on the so called ‘Anthropology of Astrology”? Thanks''
And then , immediately you again are giving reference of a source that answers to your demand.
So, what is our role , or what are u expecting from other members of OAC ? to criticize your discoveries ?

Permalink Reply by Ranjan Lekhy on March 20, 2010 at 1:01pm Astrology is likely to be discussed by anthropologists as one type of practice of divination. There is a lot of anthropological writing on divination. But it might also be talked about under the label 'ethnoastronomy'; if the issue is how particular groups of people understand the stars, that is. Curiously, JG Frazer does not give over much of his Golden Bough to astrology, at least not the abridged version I have on my shelf.

Permalink Reply by Huon Wardle on March 23, 2010 at 1:05pm Thanks, Huon! I was just trying to relate with my studies on poverty. Many people in Nepal are fatalistic. Prof. Dor Bahadur Bista, the first Nepali anthropologist, gives very good example that how Fatalism is an obstacle in modernization and development of Nepal. he says in his book "Fatalism and Development" that fatalism is rooted into the structure of the Hindu caste and belief systems of Nepal. In fact, I am not looking for any bridge literature but pure anthropological work that can help me in my studies. I have no power to reconcile the two disciplines anthropology and astrology. I pasted the above review because it sounded to me interesting but unfortunately it made me unnecessarily misunderstood by fellow scholars!
Yes, when Prof. Roy Ellen was here at the University of Hyderabad in 2006 at our seminar on 'Indigenous Knowledge', an engineer presented that how in medieval history of India, Indian astrologers pushed India into dark age. Any way, thanks for your kind assistance!
