I'm currently reading Gillian Tett's account of her Wall Street ethnography 'Fools Gold'. I'm a couple of years late, but am fascinated by the different perspectives she offers of the bankers' decisions and dilemas as their derivities world spun out of control..

 

On an old note, I'm back in the Engineering firm, they found that they value my understanding of their different way of doing business, and this time I can be found under the title 'internal auditor'.

How anthropologist work within the business world? In a variety of ways. Anthropologist Anna Kirah worked on a Microsoft team developing technology as MSN and more based on her ethographic fieldworks. I myself worked several years as a concept developer and strategic advisor with the IT sector whereas I did mini-fieldworks within organizations and made holistic IT concepts based on my findings and overall business strategy. So within organizational development (on performance) and Information technology there is lots of needs for people as us to dig up strategic elements to use to achieve wanted results. For the moment I've working on my PhD within Enterprise 2.0 (social media for internal collaboration and knowledge sharing within a global company). A classic reading is The theory of the growth of the firm by Edith Penrose (who by her research field of interest and by her critical contribution to economics should be an exellently read for anthropologists interesed in business)

Michael, the problem may be your choice of key words. I just did a straight Google Search for "household enterprises" and got back 10,600,000 results. I also seem to recall that the ethnographic literature on overseas Chinese includes a lot of relevant material and suspect that the same is true of other business-minded culture diasporas, Indian, Jewish, or Lebanese, for example.

A search on the web (including Google Scholar) for material on the ethnography of family business and the business family, as well as cross-cultural aspects of family business, has not yielded very much. Grateful for any recommendations and/or resources. Many thanks.

Hi to all,
Although my early training was in anthropology, I have become more involved in the practice of business I still like to catch up with what is going on in economic and business anthropology. With my anthropological qualifications, I have managed to have an interesting career in international business. I have worked as a Trade Commissioner for the Australian government in Russia and India and for the business school IMD developing their China market. My current project involves introducing Chinese, Russian and Indian companies to the European market - a task fraught with many interesting cultural learning opportunities. best regards to all, Richard
