Anthropology of Fiction

Reading, or writing a good fiction book can be culturally and politically immersive. Authors like Ursula K. Le Guin have literally created entire civilizations through the written word, and used them to explore many anthropological themes.

Actually, it is quite striking how many quite successful contemporary writers have training in anthropology - China Miéville and Stephen Erikson come to mind first, but that's personal bias. Has anybody else insightful examples of anthropologists turning fiction writers?

Well, he is interesting in that he was an SF writer in the narrow sense, that is, someone who tried to draft social developments and very much thought about the influence of technology on society.
Consider Nemo. A dystopianist in his utopian submarine.
There are more of these stories which follow visionary individuals who proceed to set up "their own society"...
Anyway, I suggest starting "discussion" for such specific interests, and leaving the "wall" for more general commentary.

Jules Verne created fantastic stories... Though I haven't read them in ages. As far as I can recall, he explored scientific exploration and what great shifts would do, or enable us to do.... I remember fondly the sense of adventure but... Perhaps you'd like to pick out a book to start looking at?
