Travel writing and other representations of journeys as cultural practice and product are engaging the attention of scholars and commentators in a wide range of disciplines and its study is becoming recognized as an important academic field. Since 2000, the remit of Journeys is to reflect the rich diversity of travels and journeys as social and cultural practices as well as their significance as metaphorical processes. It is a broad-based interdisciplinary journal of particular interest for those involved in the studies of travel writing from the perspectives of, for example, anthropology, social history, religious studies, human geography, literary criticism and cultural studies.

The Editors welcome contributions. Authors should electronically submit articles as attachments by e-mail, formatted as Microsoft Word files. Please note that all correspondence will be transmitted via e-mail.

ARTICLE/REVIEW LENGTH
Articles should be between 5,000 and 7,000 words, although longer papers may be considered.
Reviews should fall within the range of 2,000 to 4,000 words in length.

Please read the theme and then browse the accepted panels to find a suitable one for your work. Please note the following:

1. Proposals should be made via this online form, not by emailed attachment: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ciea7

The first step is to sign up for an account. Proposals sent by e-mail
will be ignored.

2. Abstracts are limited to 150 words.
3. Key-words should be 2 or 3.
4. Each panel page shows its title, abstract and the names and contacts of its conveners.
5. Panel conveners will make their decisions over which papers to accept by the end of April; then they communicate it to each of the proponents by e-mail. Accepted abstracts will be later shown on the panel page.
6. Each presenter will be given up to a maximum of 30 minutes - usually 20 minutes presenting and 10 minutes for questions/discussion.

Rewards and Frustrations of Fieldwork: Methodological Issues Faced in the Study of Roma, Gypsies, and Travelers

Romani Studies invites submissions of papers focusing on Roma, Gypsies, and Travellers related to questions of fieldwork, methodology, research methods, and/or ethics. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

issues relating to problems, experiences, and successes in fieldwork
implementation of various methods (use of focus groups, interviews, participant-observation, quantitative methods, etc.)
ethical dilemmas and questions of power
speaking for the “other”
tensions between policy and the theoretical, or theory and practice
problems of translation and language
defining ‘home’ and the ‘field’
questions of trust and access
representation
conducting an ethnography of those following a travelling way of life


There is no deadline, as we will be publishing this themed paper series over a number of issues of Romani Studies. Submissions are invited in the form of full research papers, which should follow the guidelines for contributors (www.romanistudies.org). All submissions will be assessed by peer-reviewers. Romani Studies is part of the Project MUSE distribution system for electronic journals and is available at over 900 university libraries around the world.

The Swedish Osteological Association has begun the process of working on our periodical Benbiten (the Bone fragment ) 2010:1 and is now looking for articles, large and small, which primarily related to osteology; prehistoric, historic or modern contexts and related topics, such as graves, animal husbandry, hunting and hunting methods, etc.

If you have something in the drawer ready to be published please get in touch with us. We are also interested in short reports of interesting findings (both new and old), reviews of exhibitions, books, etc.

The deadline is May 15th

The Central States Anthropological Society Annual Meetings will be held in Madison, WI from April 7-11. Full conference information and submission of abstracts can be made online, until December 1st at : Central States Meetings
This is a great, friendly, regional conference. It is also very welcoming of student presenters, and a great first conference for your students. We are interested in papers from all four fields. If you are planning on being in the Midwest in April, don't miss this conference.

Ethnographic and Documentary Film Festival Vienna

The ETHNOCINECA is a unique film festival in the city of Vienna, Austria, which is dedicated to anthropological themes. Initiated by the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (University of Vienna) and organized
by anthropology students and MASN-Austria, this year's Ethnographic and Documentary Filmfest Vienna will take place from the
18th to the 21st of May 2010.

The ETHNOCINECA intends to provide a platform for all media-artists and filmmakers who concentrate on anthropological issues like home,
otherness, migration, oppression, liberation, poverty etc. to introduce their works to a broader audience. A public discussion about the visually presented issues shall be stimulated and facilitated.

I also thank Dawn Stricklin for the call and link to the magazine. It sounds like a great project. I hope to be able to submit something at some point. Its great they also accept art work...

Popular Anthropology is a quarterly, interdisciplinary magazine. Published online and free to the general public, Popular Anthropology magazine is interested in providing knowledgeable articles on just about every subject available.

One of the biggest problems existing between academia and the public is not the lack of communication, but the inability to use a common language understood by all. Scholars will often use terminology that is particular to their field; language that scholars in other fields and the public might not use themselves. At Popular Anthropology we do not underestimate the public. However, we do expect authors to explain concepts and theories in a way that is plain and easy for everyone to understand.
