I'm interested in conducting research into the anthropology of the Internet/internets. I am hoping this group will discuss how and in what ways people use the Internet and how this either augments or alters sociality. Any takers?

hello Beck, Ainslee, Lucine, I hope you are pretty fine. For me the next issue on my research agenda is to do some kind of ethnography of a social media site. I do not know so much in what direction I would I have to start,but, for these days I am reading random: "Virtual Ethnicity. Race, resistance and the World Wide Web, from Linda Leung (Ashgate Publishing, 2006), and that classic title called "Access Era" from Jeremy Rifkin. Any other idea? Beck, Iwill take a look over Shirky's book, sounds good. regards, raul

Hi Beck, this is a subject that fascinates me, and am hoping to focus on this area after undegrad. I personally find that I am more sociable on the internet, and then shy in person around the same people.

Having said that, it has enabled me to meet more people than I would have previously.

Beck here again. I am reading Clay Shirky's (2008) Here Comes Everybody: How Change Happens When People Come Together Camberwell Vic. Penguin.

The blurb calls it a masterpiiece, I am not so sure about that. Shirky is convinced that the Internet is bringing about some type of social change - mainly that with the Internet, everybody can have a say and more importantly people can get together. Anyone else read it?
