IUAES 2013

IUAES World Congress 2013

The seventeenth meeting in the series of five yearly world congresses of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences will be held in Manchester, England, from August 5 to August 10, 2013. Since the first meeting was held in 1934, these congresses have provided a forum for anthropologists from all regions of the world and all sub-fields of the discipline to learn about each others’ work and engage in dialogue about fundamental questions in the study of the human condition, past and present.

With its overall theme of “Evolving Humanity, Emerging Worlds,” the congress aims to define an up-to-date agenda for the future development of anthropology. The world in which we live is presenting us with growing economic, social and environmental challenges but it is also becoming more multipolar than it has been for a very long time, a situation that presents anthropology with many positive opportunities. The congress will feature both plenary sessions taking the form of public debates and multiple simultaneous panels, grouped into broad thematic tracks. Although there are specialist panels of interest to biological, socio-cultural, linguistic anthropologists and archaeologists, the thematic tracks and their sub-themes have been designed to encourage dialogue across sub-fields as well as across the boundaries of regional specializations and national intellectual traditions. There are also tracks specifically orientated to visual and museums anthropology and the organizers welcome contributions relating to all areas of anthropology and its uses inside and outside the academy.
