Having read much about the ancient Maya, it has struck me as strange that, seemingly, nothing epigraphic, nothing of symbolic material culture, and nothing of oral tradition seems to give volcanoes a place in the cosmology. Have I missed something important?
Hello, people! I'm a retired geologist, much interested in human history and prehistory. Long ago I was privileged to visit Copan, Quirigua, Tikal, Xunantunich, and Altun Ha. I've read a lot about the Maya, and hope to go back to Copan, for example, in these post-tunneling, new-museum days! Anybody have an explanation for the great hoard of Pachuca obsidian at Altun Ha? Cheers, Larry
