You might find the following event organised by the graduate masters students at Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology of interest.

Ethnographic Documentary Screenings and Sensory Media Exhibition

Presenting research undertaken by postgraduate students of the Granada Centre Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester.

The event will interweave film, still photography and aural representations gathered from fieldwork across the world - the UK, Argentina, India, China, Peru, Romania, Tajikistan, Greece, Senegal, Israel, USA, Holland, Indonesia, Colombia, Denmark...we could go on! 

Come join us for three days of ethnographic enchantment, exploring a rich diversity of anthropological themes ranging from innovation, kinship, migration, sexuality and community.

Fabian Holt and I hope you'll enjoy our new coedited book Musical Performance and the Changing City. There will be more affordable formats available at some stage. Maybe for now ask your library to get it for you. Cheers!

I would be interested to start us with random thoughts on what is music, what is sound, what is the one in relation to the other? How can we get a grip of them ethnographically? What are the different spaces in which they exist, real, virtual, acoustic... How do those interrelate?

Anthropologically I am interested in the use of music traditionally to heal and empower the community, in shamanism for example, or other religious ceremonies, African American slave songs and the transition to blues from whence modern music derives, Greek Tragedy...
