Comment by Laura Naylor on October 28, 2009 at 11:13pm: I can say with complete honesty whilst I spent a chunk of my summer considering the possible places to go to do postgraduate study I am still none the wiser as to which I might go to. To be honest I was mostly considering them in terms of where they were and whether or not I'd like to live there. Nevermind what requirements they might ask of me, who teaches what there and whether I could even afford it.
I find one of the hardest parts of being a student that hopes to go on in the field and be successful is knowing where to start, I have a feeling I should be planning it all out but not a clue as to where to begin. I'd ask my professors but they are busy people and I'm not sure I can ask them to devote any extra time to me personally considering they teach hundreds of students.
Its all baffling to say the least
When you hear about the more 'iconic' anthropologists they all seem to have been taught by or with another great anthropologist so im wondering if I should even be taking fame of staff in as something to be concerned with.

I've done research in social/cultural/biological issues, attended 3 archaeology field schools, and found the topics of human evolution absolutely fascinating. I find making a choice which excludes nearly all the facets of anthro I find interesting very difficult.

Even though I have excellent grades, great recommendations, and surprisingly good GRE scores, a selective department turned me down due to my lack of focus. Ouch!

What bothers me is that the undergrad program I'm in is a general one-- they hit you with all four fields and do not allow for any official specialization. But upon applying to graduate programs, we are expected to have focused in on one small aspect of one subject within one of the subfields.

Comment by Laura Naylor on October 28, 2009 at 10:39pm: I have to say I'm finding the number of options out there bewildering. I did better in my first year than I was expecting and that opened up more options for me, as my sociology tutor used to tell me sometimes choice is as hard to cope with as no choice.
I'm a social anthropologist as well, I did a module of Biological Anthropology but I'm afraid I'm going to stick to living people.
There are so many topics covered in anthropology, I mean an entire world of aspects of human existence, alot of which is interesting, is alot to pick from.
