Ethnographic and Documentary Film Festival Vienna

The ETHNOCINECA is a unique film festival in the city of Vienna, Austria, which is dedicated to anthropological themes. Initiated by the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (University of Vienna) and organized
by anthropology students and MASN-Austria, this year's Ethnographic and Documentary Filmfest Vienna will take place from the
18th to the 21st of May 2010.

The ETHNOCINECA intends to provide a platform for all media-artists and filmmakers who concentrate on anthropological issues like home,
otherness, migration, oppression, liberation, poverty etc. to introduce their works to a broader audience. A public discussion about the visually presented issues shall be stimulated and facilitated.

We invite all filmmakers and media artists to submit their films until 15 January 2010. You can download the rules and regulations as well as the film submission form from the following page:

salamitssiz be! after completing my BFA in photography i volunteered for over two years in a rural town in kazakhstan where i was able to travel to different parts of the country and learned to appreciate the different cultures. i continued to southeast asia for a little r & r and met very interesting people which led to my interest in anthropology.

i'm very excited to be a part of this group. everyone here seems to be working on very interesting projects and i hope to learn and exchange thoughts with everyone.

Hello everybody! I am a student of Social and Cultural Anthropology from Munich, Germany. Right now I`m preparing my thesis about film-perception, the position of ethnographic film and the relations between fictional and nonfictional films. Last year me and two other student friends of mine made a experimental short-documentary on how migration is treated in our society.

Nice to be here, I am looking forward to interchange thoughts with you!

In May I completed a BA with a double major in Fine Arts and Anthropology (concentrations in photography and visual cultural anthropology). This fall, I'll begin the Visual Anth taught MA programme at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England.

In 2008, I conducted ethnographic and quantitative research and analysis on vendor and consumer perceptions of authenticity and involvement in the conceptualization of Samoan handicraft products. My senior year, I conducted photographic studies of the Bozo fishermen in and around Bamako, Mali in 2008, working alongside Malian photographer Fatoumata Diabate.

It might be not a bad idea, if everybody would introduce oneself here so we can get a picture of each other....

I am a student from Halle (Germany) and a member of a group of different people working on Visual Anthropology ( I did my fieldwork in Guguletu, South Africa on eHealth and Telemedicine. However, I am working on two films at the moment. One will collect narratives from African migrants on very different topics in Halle and is very much to start in the next weeks. A second film on masculinity in South Africa will be shot at the end of this year. Very nice to meet you all…

Hello everyone, my name is Maria and I am currently 'doing' a PhD in Anthropology at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. My topic is identity politics and commoditization of culture in folk festivals of Moors and Christians in Portugal, Spain and Brasil. I have just returned from Brasil with an enormous amount of visual material which I am now trying to sort.
Nice to meet you all, hope we can be of use to each other.
