Design Anthropology

Please visit the new design anthropology group at the Collaborative Anthropology Network!

Design Anthropology is a transdisciplinary area of research and practice that is holistically constitutive of a whole spectrum of diverse relationships that have historically formed between the fields of design and anthropology, as well as other intersecting fields.

While there is still a space between the two fields as they are traditionally taught and predominantly practiced, design anthropology represents a project for an entirely new epistemology of design, with a critical mass of new design theory and a new way of practicing design that is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with being a world-building activity. Amplifying the commonalities between the two fields of design and anthropology and resolving their disconnections by extending the theoretical trajectories of the field of anthropology into the future through design by conceiving of participatory, speculative, and critical design events together as a pliant, actuating field site for (design) anthropological inquiries.
