ROC meter 1

A device that measures the output of electricity from a renewable energy generator (such as a wind farm, solar panel, anaerobic digestor or gasifier/pyrolyzer). This measurement allows for the 'renewable energy' produced to be converted into green certificates ('ROCs' in the UK) that can then be traded apart from the electricity they represent.

Monitoring the energy generated by renewable technologies is important because it allows energy suppliers to prove to the UK they are fulfilling their responsibility to buy "green" energy, it allows the UK to claim it is fulfilling its obligation to the EU, and it allows the EU to claim it is meeting the dictates of the Kyoto Protocol. Ultimately, everyone can feel like they are saving the planet from destruction, one kilowatt at a time.
