Anaerobic digestors are sealed chambers (typically steel or concrete tanks) populated with sensitive microbes that process biodegradable waste (animal slurry, food waste, green waste...) into a usable fertilizer ('digestate') and biogas (i.e. methane).
He's an enterprising farmer: got a digestor before it became heavily subsidized by the government and now he's designed and installed a new one, hoping to capitalize on the Renewables Obligation and the market for plants (like his) that earn twice the green certificates (or "ROCs").
