About Me

With a broad education in cultural anthropology and public administration, Alex Posecznick pursues scholarship in the complex experiences and practices embedded in educational settings in contemporary North America. His experiences in higher education administration and student affairs over nine years give him insights into questions of educational policy, practice and consequence. His current work is particularly interested in the ways that neo-liberal bureaucracies act upon students: re-configuring the reality on the ground to American meritocratic sensibilities.

He has conducted research related to attrition/retention among adult students, socio-educational practices among engineering undergraduates and the socio-cultural ramifications of undergraduate admission policies. His interests include:

* Anthropology of (Higher) Education
* Social Mobility in America
* Inclusion/Exclusion in Polities of Practice
* Social Theories of Learning
* Practices and Consequences of Meritocracy
* Non-traditional College Student Pathways
* Education as Transformation
* Educational Credentialism

Thanks, Alex. I signed up and look forward to engaging in the discussions, though I may watch from the virtual sidelines at first. It was really nice to finally meet you last Friday and hear about your experiences at TC and in the field. Sounds like you've figured out how to play the game and are well on your way to writing a fascinating dissertation. It makes sense that someone who studies bureaucracy had learned to succeed in the PhD game.
All the very best to you, L

Dear Alex,

Yes, I defended spring 08, did a final round of revisions summer 08 and graduated Oct. 08 I'm now working at Rice University as the Assistant Director of the Chao Center for Asian Studies. My husband got a great job in Houston, so I followed him down here.
