HI Kieron- Interview one? Is the quote from Deciphering a Meal, Purity and Danger or something else? In general she says that the categories we employ emerge from our experience of social life and the way we work through it symbolically. Even in her analysis of Leviticus and Deuteronomy she is keen to relate her analysis to tancient Semitic ritual life. Bulmer exemplifies this in outlining a taxonomy for the Karam but in arguing that one needs to go beyond that to explain the anomalous status of the cassowary as not-bird amongst people who are generally astute in classifying the natural world.
