My research is centered around North American Indian art and material culture.

I'm interested in the potentials and limitations of the visual in relation to indigenous social engagements and practices of assertion within and without art market practices. Emphasis is upon (but not limited to) contemporary art production.

Mylene, thanks for inviting me. I only occasionally visit this site, so am late acknowledging you. I am going to attend the Soc for Cul Anth meetings in Santa Fe this May, but am not reading anything concerning art or film. You probably know some of my biases and rants on the latter. You probably know my partner, Lucy Lippard, who is a lot nicer (tho no less critical) than am I. Thanks for addding me. Jim Faris

Thanks for that wall comment, Mylene. There's a media anthropology e-seminar on at the moment on media and identity among the Kadazan of Borneo that may be of interest to you, see
http://www.media-anthropology.net/workingpapers.htm

Have you got any papers/articles online on your work?

Thanks for futher comment on the video -- I've posted more in the same place (though I'm struggling to get comment boxes to do what I want them to, like showing a hyperlink in the place I want it to appear!).

Thank you Mylene for inviting me. Although I have never worked in the Americas, for a variety of personal and other reasons I have become interested in the situation of indigenous Mexicans from Oaxaca living and working in California (as agricultural laboruers) especially where they have little knowledge of either Spanish or English, and especially where they have run into difficulties with the law. A long way from your own concerns, I fear!

Best regards

Ralph Grillo

Hi Mylene,

Maybe we could meet up after La Rentree. I would be interested to know more about your work and those you work with I am glad you opened up a discussion group on art and anthropology. I have been spending time in South Africa with David Szanton who has an extraordinary project involving traditional painters in India and who joined OAC. It would be a good thing if the two of you were in contact.

Bien cordialement,

Keith
