I find that when you move to a new country and start learning the language, certain words, idioms and expressions come to be extremely important as hooks which you use to understand a whole host of other things. The following is meant as a guide with a few extras on applying to Universities in the USA and France. I started from knowing nothing about the process and could have done with something like this about two years ago. Any comments or criticisms are welcome.
