about myself

i teach anthropology at okangan college in kelowna, british columbia. my specialization is linguistic anthropology with an interest in pidgins/creoles, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and Austronesian languages. i did fieldwork in west new britain, papua new guinea, with my husband william thurston in 1978, 1981, 1982, and 1988. i taught English as a Second Language for 20 years in toronto, hamilton (ontario), and kelowna. i also taught TESL (teaching English as a Second Language) for several years. i am an avid organic gardener and have strong political views about food, health, nutrition, farmer's rights, the problems with agribusiness and the petrochemical industry. bil and i are currently renovating a run-down doukhobour house in the slocan valley where we will live while we build our retirement house on the same acreage. i love nature and the mountains and british columbia has them both in satisfying amounts. :)
