I chanced upon this initiative through a posting that was linked to a petition against impending cuts to Anthropology at Glasgow ("http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/glasgowuniversityanthropology/). Many of you at OAC probably know about this already; otherwise, you might want to have a look at the petition.  

Just a quick intro ... I recently completed my PhD at SOAS, at the Centre for Media and Film Studies.  Based on fieldwork at a minority language television channel in Singapore, my dissertation considered television production practices in relation to the imagining and production of a modern Malay subject, one who is loyal, modern, and ready for the new economy.    

Being a former television producer myself both helped and hindered my access to the field.  Some of those with whom I worked in my research were formerly professional colleagues of mine - and this presents peculiar problems in an exercise of ethnography at home.  And now that I have "finished", I am hoping to engage further with the producers, including the co-production of television programmes for popular consumption.  The question I am struggling with is how to actually do this in ways that will be meaningful and true to the anthropological enterprise. Hence, my search....
